Godhate: Equal in the eyes of death

02/08/10  ||  Trauma

I’ve had sort of a hiatus for maybe a month or so from having anything published, and you probably didn’t miss me. That is nothing compared to Godhate(formerly Throneaeon)‘s hiatus from recorded material, which by the time this record was released is 5, count ‘em, 5 years. I can guarantee you fans of these guys certainly missed them. Their previous album did quite well here. Lord K reviewed it, so if it’s death metal and it’s real good you can add or subtract 1 points for taste differences. I add 1 point, myself.

I want to start out the review proper by first saying that “In praise of sin” just might be one of the best metal songs I’ve heard recently. It’s got a mix of everything and the chorus is so infectious you just can’t help but grunting along with it. With that it’s pretty safe to say that these guys lost absolutely nothing with the name change and the long time between material. The wait was well fucken worth it, in-fucken-deed. “Godhate” is a massacre of an opener, “Dark funeral” is a mid-paced crusher, and “Antichristianity” sounds exactly like it should.

Tony Freed sounds absolutely fantastic. He’s got this grunt similar to Peter from Vader, but it’s got a lot more of a snarl. It helps them stand out in a good way, of course. The guitars sound fantastic, as well. Just the right amount of gain and distortion to them and mixed real well. It also helps they are played in the key of evil. That’s right, no happy sounding riffs to be heard on “Equal in the eyes of death”. You’ll hear some black-tinged riffage throughout the record on songs like the aformentioned “In praise…”. While we’re on the point of riffs I just wanna say that around the 3:15 mark in “Dark funeral” you get a taste of a great riff and breakdown of sorts. It just popped on my speakers, two seconds ago, and instantly it said to me, “You must make mention of how awesome I am”.

The rest of the bands seems on-point and I can’t make any complaints whatsoever. The drums even have a good sound to them, but I’m no snob so if the hi-hat sounds like it could have used an extra inch in diameter I certainly am not your guy. I like the production on this fucker, keeps the music clearly evil.

Lord K was on the money before:

Godhate are quite fucken excellent.
